The highlight of the SYS calendar, the SYS Annual Conference took place in the Limerick Strand Hotel in the heart of Limerick city on the weekend of the 21-23 October 2016.
It turned out to be a poignant weekend for both Limerick city and Munster rugby as the first Munster game following the passing of head coach and rugby legend, Anthony Foley, took place only a few minutes away from the hotel in Thomond Park.
Being an Olympics year, the topic of the conference was, fittingly, ‘Sports and the Law’. It made for a very interesting discussion on various aspects of the unlikely association between the two areas.
Speakers included Simon Keogh (Operations Manager and Head of Legal Affairs in Irupa), Shane O’Neill (Partner and Head of the Sports Law practice at Sweeney McGann Solicitors, Limerick and former Limerick and Na Piarsaigh hurler) and Laura Donnellan (Lecturer at the University of Limerick and author of ‘Sport and the Law’).
Down Syndrome Ireland was the Society’s chosen charity for 2016 with proceeds going to the worthy cause from both conference ticket sales and a raffle at the gala dinner which had impressive prizes including a signed rugby ball and a signed Leinster rugby jersey.
James Meehan, SYS Treasurer for 2016, addressed the delegates at the gala dinner thanking the speakers and delegates for their attendance, our 2016 conference sponsors Brightwater Recruitment Specialists and Bank of Ireland for their support, and the hotel staff at the Limerick Strand Hotel for their excellent hospitality.
Following a very tasty dinner, the delegates hit the dancefloor (and the stage!) to the familiar sound of Deja Boo – a great night was had by all and as always the weekend was a very enjoyable one!
