The main event hosted in 2015 by the Society of Young Solicitors in Ireland was the SYS Annual Conference, held in the Sheraton Athlone Hotel. It was the society’s largest weekend conference to date, attended by well over 300 delegates.

On 13 November 2015 delegates from across Ireland converged on Athlone for what was to be an enjoyable weekend of education and networking amongst younger members of the solicitor profession. The conference, held on the morning of 14 November, focused on the topic of Privacy in the Digital Age.

Our speakers were Emma Redmond (Senior Data Protection and Privacy Counsel, LinkedIn), Cliona Kimber (BL) and Sadhbh McCarthy (founder and former Director of the Centre for Irish and European Security). The speakers took different approaches to what was a wide subject matter and highlighted some of the more important future issues in this area. The conference was chaired by Mr Paul Anthony McDermott SC, who addressed the crowd between speakers, giving his own thoughts and comments along with a sprinkling of his unique brand of jokes and anecdotes.

The Irish Hospice Foundation was the Society’s chosen charity for 2015 and this was acknowledged at the Black Tie Gala Dinner with a tasteful replica sunflower badge on every side plate.

The evening flew by, from the pre-dinner drinks reception, through dinner, to dancing the night away to the music of Deja Boo. By now the members of Deja Boo probably have more CPD points than some of the delegates – this was their fifth year playing at the SYS conference and they continue to be hugely popular.

The SYS Chair, Sarah Lawn, thanked the speakers and delegates for their attendance, our main sponsor Brightwater Recruitment Specialists for their continued support and the hotel for their hospitality.

The delegates left on Sunday morning, hopefully with a little bit more knowledge and many new acquaintances.
